English Lake District

Windermere - an ideal place from which to explore the English Lake District

Windermere is not only a superb holiday destination with something for everyone but is an ideal place to break the journey for those who are travelling to or from Scotland. Although the Lake District is a relatively small area of England its special advantage for visitors is its close proximity to the M6 motorway and convenient rail and bus connections. There are many attractions, and opportunities for walking, cycling and general sightseeing that are world class. Just a short walk from Brendan Chase and you are in splendid countryside, on your way to an unforgettable day on the fells.

Whether you are travelling by car, public transport or on foot, you will not find a better location from which to start your exploration of the Lake District than Brendan Chase in Windermere. The town grew following the arrival of the railway in 1848 and its centre boasts many fine buildings dating from the second half of Queen Victoria's reign. Lake Windermere at Bowness, a busy and sometimes 'touristy' place in contrast to the more sedate Windermere, is a mile distant and can be reached by a pleasant twenty minute walk or by taking one of the frequent buses that pass close to the house. Those arriving by rail or bus should not feel disadvantaged or restricted by their lack of a car as the local bus services around the Lake District are frequent, inexpensive and reach all the towns and other places of interest. We can, of course, arrange car hire and tours that enable visitors to see the best the area has to offer, using experienced guides.

Bowness on Windermere, within walking distance

We always recommend our visitors to walk to Orrest Head, a viewpoint made famous by Alfred Wainwright in his book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. The walk takes about three quarters of an hour, and rewards with uninterrupted views of Lake Windermere, the highest hills in England to the west, the Pennine chain to the east and a glimpse of the treacherous sands of Morecambe Bay and the sea to the south.

Places such as Hill Top and Grasmere that gave inspiration to Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth are close at hand and easily accessible by car or public transport from Brendan Chase.
