Windermere is an excellent base from which to explore the Lake District whether you arrive by public transport or car. We hold a vast range of brochures for the many local attractions and there are large wall maps which we use to help our visitors plan their day. A list of suggested walks and excursions by car is also available to our guests.
We are able to recommend places to eat and advise on, and arrange tours either for a full or half day. These tours are an ideal way of getting the best from a visit to the Lake District especially for those with limited time. Guests are collected from the house.
For guests with cars we can recommend routes taking in some of the very best sights in the Lake District, for example, why not try the spectacular drive over the Wrynose and Hardknott passes with a stop at the remains of the Roman fort the home of 500 soldiers.
For those who arrive by public transport we can, of course, advise on the use of local buses and lake ferries that will allow the visitor to see all the sights at modest cost.
And beyond……
We are often asked to recommend other places of interest by those passing through Windermere. As an example, for those travelling to Edinburgh, which is some 150 miles distant, we recommend a visit to the excellent museum at Vindolanda and the nearby Roman fort of Housesteads on Hadrian's Wall, after taking the picturesque cross-country route through Alston, the highest market town in England.
The Yorkshire Dales with its spectacular limestone scenery is only a short car journey away. We can recommend walks and suggest places of historic interest to visit, such as Skipton castle which is one of the most complete castles in England with a history stretching back for almost a thousand years.
